In North America, red-winged Blackbirds lay eggs and breed in various habitats, but tend to choose wetlands. They have been known to live in fresh marshes and salt water. On drier land, red-winged black birds are attracted to open land (often in agricultural areas) and mild forested deciduous forests.

These aggressive species are widespread and abundant at lower elevations in almost every habitat as long as the micro habitat that matches the vegetation that appears is available. They can be found along the road where trenches have created suitable habitat. Rarely, they will nest in highland bushes.
