I don't think the radical leadership is capable of stopping the beast, even if they wanted to. It has achieved an autonomous dynamic that will devour them. Of course, it may be that their goal is the bringing down of the west and they will gladly go with the fuzzy feeling of martyrdom to their ultimate demise.
