Why is 'play time' important and what are some of your favourite things to do just for fun ? @ecotrain question of the week!

I can still remember the very first time in my life aged 7 when I was having SO much fun playing with my friend that I simply could not believe it was already 5pm and time for him to leave. How was that possible i remember thinking!? As far as I was concerned it had been half that amount of time, and yet some how time had seemingly warped, and that was the first time it had ever happened! Is this significant? Why does time speed up when we are having fun? Playing or hanging out with friends does have slightly different connotations now im 45 years old, but even today, any time im having fun the time just flies by!

SO why is it important to have fun? Well to simply LET GO would be high up there on my list of reasons! I spend SO much time thinking, and pushing, and doing, and making things happen that need to happen etc etc.. Its very easy to get rather attached to all of this, and the outcomes of it all too! Its only when I have some fun that I really am able to forget about everything and just be in the moment here and now.. In a way it is like a reset button, but it is also much more! When we have fun we engage our brain in ways that open it up and start our creative juices flowing. The rush of happy hormones that we get when we are having fun can bring us great gifts even after we have finished having fun, and more often than not i will have much better ideas, and indeed much more fun ideas afterwards!

Play time is also ESPECIALLY and most important for BONDING! There is no better way to get to know someone then to play and have fun with them.. We can have total freedom in that scenario to be who we are, and not have to accomplish anything with any pressure or stress. After the fun is over, we can very easily and instantly see how that changes and warms up the dynamics between us, and this is most certainly the case regardless of age!

So what Do I do for fun? Well, top of my list right now has to be African drumming which is something that I do most Sundays at home. I spend about and hour basically just losing my self in rhythms, and work myself up into quite a nice state! I do prefer playing with others, but there is no one else who plays around here, so i learned to play for everyone and really have fun! Many years ago i use to take my drum with me to techno nigh-clubs and play with the crowds, and festivals like Glastonbury.. i have fond memories of playing all night long around the stone circle with naked people dancing and total unadulterated fun!.. but that is another story!

I also really love to cook, and for me that is what I call fun, most of the time! I enjoy making everything look and taste good, and easily spend two hours a day cooking and preparing something. If I have guests then I really go for it and will end up cooking all day.. and I enjoy it so long as I remember to eat!

I don't have a huge long list of other fun things I do, although its fair to say I manage to enjoy what I do rather than do what I enjoy! Its easy to make ANYTHING fun, and if we have a positive mindset, and are here in the moment we can really have fun whilst doing anything! Maybe that is one of the secrets to a happy life, it sure works for the Fun people that I know!

My favorite is to spend time with friends by arranging home parties. We cook the food ourselves, and then once the food is ready, we start the party with drinks. Its a lot of fun, spending 6-8 hrs and sleeping there finally.......

Ah yes the music, I used to lose myself in the music playing guitar... forgot all about that. You are that guy who comes to the parties playing the drum... I love that guy!!!

In the end I think you're right, and probably a lot of us do enjoy what we do no matter what it is, verses looking for the things we enjoy to do!

Yes a hot topic currently and right up my avenue of work. I play a lot and have great fun but its something I need too implement more than I do and bring into the lives of those around me. Many many thanks 💯🐒

Time does fly when you're having fun. I hear they say that. Haha I have the most fun when I am paddle boarding our in the waves and I may have been out there for 3 hours and Jamie is saying we need to go in and get something to eat and I'm like what we've only been out here for half an hour and he says my legs can't move anymore lol. Something about losing yourself in flow and I can imagine that's what happens with drumming. My boy has taught himself how to play the drums but thank God he only did it when he moved out of home as it was fun I start listening to constant guitar for 12 years lol. I do think fun brings you into the present moment and I think about when my boy plays Lego as a kid and he was so caught up in that moment to moment experience as kids naturally do. We tend to lose that ability as adults. So anything that makes you lose yourself in the moment is very precious play indeed

Lol... honestly I'm a workaholic, though my work would scarcely be recognized as such by others. The only time I was really able to relax and let go was when I'm playing games with friends, preferrably table-top (or Virtual Table Top) games. Rather painfully, I realized that it had grown stagnant and devolved into a bunch of old gamers wasting their lives. Sad, but it happens. So I threw myself back into my work full-time, and I'm much happier now to be following my Glory rather than hiding from it. My work has replaced my fun, you might say... but part of the work is creating new arenas of play and fun, so..... And I wouldn't want to go back for anything...
