Economic Freedom - The Known Ideal
I recently joined an email list on IHate.world which ended up promoting a book called The New Human Rights Movement so I decided that I would check the book out and see what it had to say.
The book was... not good. Don't get me wrong I think the author has only good intentions and many of the overarching themes were things I agree with. But the things the book is promoting are mostly pie-in-the-sky nonsense and it promotes those things with such a high degree of certainty that they will fix everything that I got annoyed.
The potential costs to implementing these things were totally ignored. It was as if only good things would flow and there were no dangers to look out for. The book also spent most of its pages talking about how terrible the world is today, but made really sure that all of today's ills are blamed on "the market".
The book didn't really go into why all of modern society, filled with things pro-market commentators find abhorrent, must be defined as "the market" but that was the idea you had to take on faith.
Now I believe that there are many bad things in society, obviously, but we have also seen amazing improvements in the world. Really, blaming everything good or bad on one aspect of society is a very dubious thing to do. What is needed is a why to try and figure out what is driving the good and bad outcomes. Not the one thing but the main thing, and I think that main thing has been found.
Economic Freedom.
This is something that has been researched by multiple different researchers and it has been sliced and diced in a lot of ways. The outcome keeps being the same though, the more economic freedom a location has the better it tends to do over time.
While things, the book focused on, like automation eliminating the need to work or being able to get all of our power from solar energy are fun to think about and even, in some cases, work towards. What really truly works today, yesterday, and tomorrow is economic freedom.
To understand a bit more about what economic freedom is and why it works I will point you to this short video:

We know what creates wealth, what helps pull people out of poverty, what helps to clean the air and foster equality. It's economic freedom.
Economic Freedom is simply the known ideal.
It's not sexy, it doesn't have cool utopian overtones, it is just the messy complex thing that actually works.
