Poetry Slam Week #9: FUTURE ( A Future That Could've Been)
inspected your freckles and thought about how,
in addition to mine,
our future children would be covered,
like honey on beehives.
and I stared into blue eyes, sweet and unhindered,
we built a whole castle,
walls formed by the purest affection.
it stood for two summers, but collapsed in the winter,
along with a future
imagined in dreams,
spoken out loud, so vividly,
painted in the words I’ve written,
both stories and poetry.
now I remember your freckles and think about how,
they aren’t even mine to count,
and those future children,
won’t exist now.
now I stay stuck, each night I’m losing sleep.
contemplating our past and the expectations we had
for a future that could’ve been, but never will be.
