In Your Eyes

in #dsound5 years ago (edited)

Back in the early 2000s, Jim Fraschetti (keyboard player extraordinaire) and I decided to put together a two-person show. The experience of looking for a drummer, finding one, losing him to another band, to general flakiness, to a job, to a newborn (the final two of which are reasonable), and looking for a bass player, finding one, losing him . . . It wears ya down--wore us down. Neither of us had the energy to keep up the search, but both of us wanted a full-band sound. "Jim," I said, "let's try this: No drummer? I'll sequence the drums. No bass player? I'll play the bass and record it. No tuned percussionist? You'll play the kalimba on your keyboard and record it. Whatever else we can't play live, we'll also record and use as backing tracks." We prepared a whole set of songs (some of the others of which I will eventually upload, here), but this one is the best. We performed it well enough, but the bulk of the credit goes to Peter Gabriel, who packed several tons of transcendence into a single song.

The song choice. Jim and I both enjoy Peter Gabriel's music. We considered, as well, Solsbury Hill and Sledgehammer, but it was In Your Eyes that was most compelling.

We recorded everything at my house. "Home studio," well. It is in my home and I like to think that it's a studio. In reality, it is a narrow room next to the laundry area. It consists of a computer, a couple of microphones, and--no, that's it, room, computer, microphones.
