On top of the Drakensberg Mountains of South Africa. This photo is taken standing on top of the Amphitheatre, a section of the Northern Drakensberg which is particularly beautiful. There is a cliff face about 5km long and about 900m high.

The view from the top is spectacular, the view from the bottom is equally so.

Of the long Drakensberg Mountain Range on the South Africa - Lesotho Border, this is one of the easiest points to get to the top. There is a road that takes you to the Sentinel Car Park. From there it is a 6-8 km walk to the top.

There are two ways up - the chain ladder (shorter) or up the Gully (longer).

In the background of the photo is the distinctive landmark - The Devil's Tooth.

The feeling of getting to the top is always jubilant.

The weather conditions need to be watched at all times and if it starts to turn bad, it is advisable to get down as soon as possible. Blizzards, although rear, have been recorded in each month of the year. Thunderstorms with lightning are a more frequent hazard.

Sort:

Blizzards. wow I wouldn't have guessed...

Yes blizzards and also if a lightening storm catches you at the top of the mountains it's advisable to grab anything metal on you and throw it as far away from you as possible to avoid attracting lightning bolts. You also need to hunch on the balls of your feet on top of your hiking backpack so that if lighting strike on the ground close to you, that the electrical currents on the ground doesn't fry you.

Oh wow. that's crazy. I can only imagine what pictures of that would look like. Better invest in some extra thick rubber soles before finding out.

lol I'm terrified of lightening so I'll just avoid being there that time of year all together!

Good post. Africa is really great. Thanks for sharing.
