RE: Again the War Between Lineman and Bird Nests Begin!!
There are all kinds of little gadgets they make for the poles and equipment on them. From plastic covers to spike strips. Bein they they are a specialty item the cost a good chunk of change. Where we have equipment on a pole w put a lot of bird guard stuff on it. But on just a typical pole we don’t really install a bunch of bird protective stuff. One thing that has been helping is instead of using 2 arms like in the photos, which create a good space for the nest to sit. We have went to a single fiberglass arm to make it more difficult to build a nest. So as we replace poles and repair them, we try to eliminate any possible nesting areas. Yet they still find a way to get their beaks in the electrical business on way or another. I will be in one of our substations tomorrow and I will show you some of the bird guard and spike we put up. It took an estimated week with 4 guys to install all of it. Heat shrink tubing the works. It actually looks pretty nice.
