Life with a samoyed puppy - Mika (with lots of pictures!)

in #dog7 years ago

So in mid December my family sporadically decided to get a puppy. We already have one dog, a 10 year old King Charles Spaniel, and we figured she would need some company in her final years of life. We drove about an hour away to pick her up, and boy was she a precious little bundle of fluff. She was 10 weeks old at the time, very small, and cuter than ever.

We decided to call her Mika. The origin of samoyeds is in Siberia, specifically in the snowy mountains and we thought this name would be quite fitting. So we took her home and introduced her to Suzie, and Suzie was not a fan as she is a very reclusive dog. However, considering she is old and tolerable, she put up with Mika constantly trying to cuddle her for warmth.

She loves to play, and she is the most timid dog in the world.

This timidness is partially because in Siberia their job was actually to sled and babysit children! Fridtjof Nansen believed that the use of sled dogs was the only effective way to explore the north and used Samoyeds on his polar expeditions. This is quite funny as they would act as both a protector, fuel source and a blanket :-) However this love for children and pulling things has its downsides, as she had a huge problem with running and barking at people and trying to play with them on the street, but with a lot of consistency and work every day on her walks, she is learning that she doesn't have to be friends with everybody - but perhaps they can admire her and her majestic fluff blowing in the wind from afar and she can dream about all the pets she would of got from everybody.

As the weeks rolled by, she got bigger...

We had a lot of problems with toilet training her, but recently we got her a crate so we can keep her in there when we are sleeping so she can build up her bladder tolerance - she loves the crate!

She is currently almost 9 months (she will be on the 4th of july, happy miniature birthday Mika!), and still has a lot of growing to do. We love her to pieces, even though barking and playing with loud things such as plastic bottles and crinkly toys is her favourite thing to do. Her favourite game is tug of war and she loves to be chased. Her and Suzie get on well now, however it depends on if Suzie is in a good mood or not.

If you have any questions about her please feel free to ask :-)
