D&D tips :How to make your characters last.

in #dnd7 years ago

kcgJsXS.jpgHey guys it's me again I was gone for a while I haven't written anything for about a month and a half but now I'm back and I'd like to get into a very important topic in DND and that's NPC's . I've talked about it before but I really want to delve into it this time mostly focusing how to make your NPCs important and really feel like a part of the story and have them be realistic you don't want all your characters to be guard number 3 or generic bartender number 7. I think first the key is to make a bunch of NPCs before you start playing I typically have 10 to 20 NPCs I give them backstories character traits flaws and thinks they're good at and then I typically like to write some way they could fit into a story maybe a small Quest that you can get if you push the right buttons or maybe more importantly part of an arc or part of the main quest it's a reoccurring character that they need multiple multiple times either way the goal is to have memorable NPC's to make the game more realistic now here or my tips.
Tip 1 making your character last
This it's predominantly done by making the character interesting and useful in multiple situations having the players want to see this character again and actively seeking him out because he has something very unique or useful about him is a good way to have your players have more fun and make it feel like real life but it also gives you a great opportunity to make this character really a part of the story if your players repeatedly want to see this person or no more about this person then it's very easy to just insert him into something big or bigger part of the story and then it seems as though that was your plan the entire time do you just sort of weave him into this art that you already have. For example he has a horse-drawn carriage and a sign that says Baeman Mont mon over the top they stop and realize that this man of magical items and so they got a few the first time and now they keep finding him on the trade routes his most important character trait is that he can't identify items he knows the spell detect Magic so he knows that the items are magical themselves but he doesn't know what they do and he has hundreds of them so he sold them for whatever he can. the next time they found him I added a story element to his character that wasn't there before the players had to help him with a quest to further his business he needed some sets of armor gathered from a man who was crafting them for him and if they could bring them back he would give them gold and other magic items the players have seen him maybe three or four times in the story already and I like to keep inserting this reoccurring character even when they don't buy anything they know that he's ever present in the world and I think that goes a long way when you know somebody doesn't just go away because they're generic guard number 3 you know this person is always in the story he's always a part of it you can actually go and find him somewhere in the world I think that's very important.
Tip to making believable character
Okay so now you've got your character he's going to last, he's got story elements to him but, what makes him believable what makes people want to seek him out learn more about his character I'd like to give the character a few character traits to stick by so that he's consistent if I'm doing any voices I make a note of that type of voice so that the voice is consistent but most importantly I like to write whether or not the character is friendly or hostile or indifferent a lot of times the characters emotions the way they interact with the players will just be because they are more of a hostile person or their hostile to the players even for something they did even though the players may or may not know why this person is upset having a guy verse culture among people in the game and varying levels of comfortability and hostility towards the players will make it seem more realistic. Okay guys that's my tips for this week hopefully I can get back to making more blogs soon and if you like this one check out my other ones thanks for all the support see you next time.DD.png
