Build do-it-yourself wooden house.

We report a step-by-step guide to build a wooden house in a simple way using the DIY technique.

Wooden houses: preliminary considerations.

Wooden houses are more comfortable every season than reinforced concrete buildings. Due to its workability and technical characteristics, wood is considered the best material used in construction. In America, most of the houses built on two or three levels are built entirely of wood or beams assembled with panels plastered. In our country there is no real wood house culture, understood as the main house. There are many wooden houses, such as garden houses designed to house wood and tools or to dressing rooms, in the presence of a swimming pool, etc..

How to build a wooden house with DIY techniques.

We assume to build a small house of 4-5sqm, quadrangular, with double pitched roof, modular, not anchored to the ground, with a door of about 60cm, formed by 7 load-bearing structures, i. e. seven panels: 1 for the floor, 4 for the walls, 2 for the roofs. The panels will be formed by a frame made of pine beams with wooden battens, with the exception of the floor which will be buffered with 3 cm thick pine or fir boards, normal or milks of insulation cavity. The cover panels, lined up with the rear wall, will project by 10cm from the side panels and 30cm from the front, in canopy modes. The front wall will house a door of 60cm, while the house will be about 210cm high in the lower part and 250cm high in the upper part. The frame of each load-bearing structure, in addition to the 4 perimeter beams, includes a central beam parallel to the shortest side, to improve its stability. A small house, therefore, that meets the requirements to be exempted from the authorizations provided for normal constructions (DIA and Municipal Technical Office).

Material: 35 pine beams section 5cmx5cm; beads thickness 3cmx15cm wide; 3cm thick pine or fir panel (which can be divided into two or more parts for ease of transport and assembly); 2 4cmx4cm joists wall height; 1 4x4cm beam length 60cm; 20 round head through bolts diameter 10mm x15cm in length; 28 angular section 5x15x15cm, nails to fix the beads and 8cm self-tapping screws to assemble the beams; 2 door hinges; wood impregnating agent. Screws, bolts, nails and corners can be found at any hardware store, while for beams, beads and floor panels we will turn to a Wood Point, also equipped for cutting. To determine the number of beads: calculate the total area of the four walls and the roof and divide it by the area of a bead. In drafting the project it is advisable to take into account the dimensions of the beads on the market, to minimize waste and work (usually the length of the beads reaches 4m, the width to 15cm and the thickness to 3cm). Tools: meter , line, pencil, claw hammer, saw, screwdriver, jigsaw, screwdriver, wood drill series

Iter operative.
Step 1
Prepare the tools and material, take the beams to make the flooring and place them on the ground to form a quadrilateral. Assemble the frame with self-tapping screws (two x angle). Place an angle bracket in each of the internal corners of the frame and fasten it with four screws. Repeat the operation for the four corners of the frame, in order to give stability to the frame, to further improve by fixing the central beam parallel to the shortest side.

Step 2

2Assembled the frame, fix the padding table/tools with self-tapping screws. Repeat the whole operation for the remaining load-bearing structures (4xpareti and 2xtetti covering) by dabbing them with beads to be fixed by means of external nails. The beads for two symmetrical walls (e. g. side walls) must extend over both sides by a length equal to the thickness of the beams (in our case 5cm) to cover the beams of the other pair of walls (front and rear). In the front wall, leave the door compartment, which you will mark with 3 x 4x4cm beams, at any point of the door.

Step 3

3Realized the 7 elements of the house, with the collaboration of several people, assemble them together temporarily with self-tapping screws. Drill the holes through the adjacent beams of the supporting structures in one with the beads and assemble the 7 panels together with the bolt feed-through bolts. For a solid assembly, drill 3 through holes for each pair of joins, one at the centre and two at the end. To prepare the holes to accommodate the bolts, start with a 3-4mm wooden tip and then continue with the 10mm bolt diameter tip. Provide each bolt with two washers on both sides to avoid damaging the wood. Once the entire structure has been assembled with bolt feed-through bolts, you can remove the self-tapping screws if necessary, if the house is intended for seasonal use and you plan to disassemble it in order to protect it from the weather.

Step 4

Close the two openings between the front wall and the roof and between it and the rear wall with two triangular panels without supporting structure, which you will fasten with thru-screws.

Step 5

Realize a frame of the size of the compartment for the door and paddle it with beads. Tighten the hinges to the door and secure them in the compartment.

Step 6.

To protect the house from the weather, cover the roof with a slated bituminous sheet of tarpaulin that you will fasten with large headed nails and treat the entire structure with an impregnating product for outdoor use.

useful information: A prefabricated house in a fir or pine strip of these characteristics, to be installed by your own care, including transport, costs about 1000 euro plus VAT. It is worthwhile to try your hand at DIY, apart from the satisfaction of having done it with your own hands.
