DIY: Minty-Cinnamon Mouthwash
We love a good mouthwash in our household. Traditional, store-bought versions often contain alcohol, fluoride (great for your teeth but not so great to ingest), and artificial colors and/or sweeteners. Although I love the nice minty kick, I was never fond of the burning sensation I always felt after using them. After a few tweaks and some essential oil testing, I found the DIY recipe below to be a wonderful alternative to store-bought options. My husband really liked the flavor as well. It doesn't burn and although it's not as strong as the conventional stuff, it's still super effective. Give it a try! Bonus: This recipe is not only natural but extremely cost effective...it’s a win-win!
Please note: Do not ingest and of course, do not use as a substitution for brushing...gargle away!
Minty-Cinnamon Mouthwash: Yields 1-12oz Mason Jar
1 1/2 cups cold, filtered water
1 tablespoon baking soda
5 drops peppermint essential oil
5 drops cinnamon essential oil
Combine all ingredients in a mason jar and shake well. Before each use, shake a bit as the baking soda will settle. Gargle for 60 seconds. Either refrigerate or store in a cool place for up to 1 month.
