Mālshree Dhun is one of the most popular and culturally significant traditional musical tunes of Nepal. It is a Newar classical melody that is especially associated with the great festival of Dashain (Mohani). The dhun is played mainly on traditional Newar instruments such as the bansuri (flute), dhimay (drum), nagara, bhusya (cymbals) and other percussion instruments, creating a rhythmic and festive sound.

Mālshree Dhun is believed to be one of the oldest surviving musical compositions of Nepal, belonging to the rāga tradition of classical music. It is said to have been composed centuries ago and has been preserved through oral tradition among Newar musicians. The tune expresses joy, prosperity, and spiritual devotion, making it an inseparable part of Nepal’s cultural heritage.

During Dashain, when families gather for tika, blessings, and celebration, Mālshree Dhun is played to mark the auspiciousness of the festival. Its melody is not only religious but also symbolic of unity, victory, and happiness. Today, the tune is performed by cultural troupes, broadcast on radios and televisions, and even adapted into modern instruments, but its essence remains deeply tied to Nepalese identity and tradition.
