Dhumba lake
Dhumba Lake
Dhumba Lake is a small and serene freshwater lake located in the Mustang district of Nepal, near the famous town of Jomsom. Situated at an altitude of around 2,900 meters (9,500 feet) above sea level, it lies at the base of the Nilgiri mountain range and offers a breathtaking view of the surrounding Himalayan landscapes.
The lake is about 150 meters long and holds significant cultural and religious importance, especially for both Buddhists and Hindus. According to local beliefs, the lake once turned red, but it was restored to its original color through the prayers and rituals performed by a Buddhist monk. Because of this sacred association, locals strictly prohibit fishing or any activities that might pollute the lake.
Surrounded by pine forests and traditional Tibetan-style houses, Dhumba Lake is not only a peaceful retreat but also a spiritual destination. It is a short hike of about 30–45 minutes from Jomsom, making it a popular side trip for trekkers on the Annapurna Circuit or those exploring the Mustang region.
Dhumba Lake is a hidden gem that offers visitors a chance to experience natural beauty, cultural heritage, and tranquility all in one place.
