Dominica, transformation of an attic into an apartment
The Barcelona architects of the RÄS studio transformed brilliantly an old attic which had a beautiful volumetric space with a double gable roof hidden behind the existing ceiling. This allowed them to convert a space of one level into a two-storey apartment with a bedroom upstairs.
Natural light flows through the house from the windows at each end of the apartment and a skylight in the roof. The neutral, especially white and gray palette keeps the space shiny and bright, thanks also to the tiled surfaces that reflect the light. A perforated steel staircase connects the two levels and allows the light to enter the space. Upstairs, the black tiles form the surface of the floor of the mezzanine, contrasting with the upper wall of white painted bricks. On the lower part of the mezzanine, a series of vaulted clay tiles form the ceiling, adding warmer tones to the gray granite floor of the apartment.
It's amazing what can be done with an attic. It's a great design and great photos. But where are all the personal items like books, music, teddy, cushions, lights..... No sofa, no TV?
