What you should know about Depression

Hello guys.

How's your day going ? I trust that its going as planned.😊

Its feels great to be back to this space to do justice to one topic that is sure to get your attention -- DEPRESSION

Depression is a global occurrence, it happens with people from all over the world, and while we Africans do not like to associate it with ourselves, it also happens here in Africa.

Depression is associated with feelings such as grief, sadness, pain, hurt, anger , frustration, heartbreak, emotional breakdown/imbalance.

Circumstances such as poor health, ailment and disease, unstable finances, broken/toxic/unstable marriages or relationships, hardship, low self esteem, bullying, abuse and the likes are factors that can trigger it.

So long before now, I wrote a poem on Depression ( I write articles and poems for leisure, and I'll be sure to drop a few here in due time), and in the first stanza, I described it as icy fingers of death gradually snuffing out life.

"Depression, so subtle and so slow,

Cold as the icy fingers of death,

Making people feel unloved, weighed down and low,

Slowly but surely, gradually snuffing out breath..."

Sometime ago, I was watching a video compilation of people with cases of chronic depression, and they were slitting their wrists, falling off buildings, injecting harmful liquids into their body, and so on. I felt really sorry for them( OK let me say this that I'm not certain if it was a video trick or if it happened real life).

From my own point of view, two things are certain about Depression.

It feels like one is slipping into darkness, helplessly falling inside an abyss. It's like being pushed down headfirst into a black hole or inside a a pool( and you can't swim) and you're just scared, confused and feeling really lost, helpless and dark inside. You might get suicidal if you don't get help real fast.

Every depressed person needs help. Therapy sessions and words of advice. Someone who they can freely open up to without being judged or condemned. A shoulder to cry on and vent their anger and talk about what's really bothering them. They need to be shown love and care as depression is no joke.
