It's always better to de-escalate. Most people who are trolling thrive off the disagreement and just want to start a massive argument simply to have an argument. If you decide to "take the high road" and don't "feed the fire" that they are building, they will get bored and go away.

The same happens with bullies in school. If everyone ignored them instead of laughed and "validated" their actions, bullies would stop. They wouldn't go away, because they'd jump to their next victim, but they would lose the attention they were so desperately seeking!
