End of Sale of First-Generation X5 Compute Instances

One of the great things about using cloud infrastructure is that you don't have to upgrade hardware. Over a year ago, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure introduced new X7 options for its Compute service. Today, we are announcing the end of sale for older X5 options to manage the capacity of this older hardware. As of November 9, 2018, we are restricting the following X5 options (SKUs):

For current monthly universal credit customers, we will continue to support the use of these options in the three regions in which they were offered—Phoenix (PHX), Ashburn (IAD), and Frankfurt (FRA). However, the availability of these options is limited, and we recommend that you use X7 shapes or AMD shapes as your deployment grows. Starting November 9, 2018, new monthly universal credit customers will have access only to the X7 and AMD shapes.

We will set the service limits for these restricted options to zero for Pay-As-You-Go customers, unless they requested a limit increase before November 9. Pay-As-You-Go customers will be able to launch only new X7 or AMD instances, although any X5 instances that are currently being used will continue to work.

The following table lists the comparable, recommended X7 or AMD shape for each X5 shape. These options generally provide increased resources compared to the older instances. X7 compute instance shapes are priced at the same cost per OCPU per hour as the X5 shapes, and AMD EPYC processor-based instances cost less.

Database Recommendations
For customers using the BM.DenseIO1.36 shape (BYOL or non-BYOL), we recommend upgrading to the X7 bare metal instance BM.DenseIO2.52 shape. It provides newer Intel Skylake processors, higher additional OCPU count, and more memory (768 GB of RAM). Additionally, the BM.DenseIO2.52 shape offers higher network bandwidth: 2x25 Gbps network connections versus a single 10-Gbps network connection for bare metal X5 Dense I/O.

For customers using the VM.Standard1.N virtual machine shapes, we recommend upgrading to X7 Standard virtual machine instances with newer Intel Skylake processors and higher network bandwidth.
