More than a hundred cyclists gathered in downtown Nairobi to bike around the city center and promote a healthy and clean transport alternative to #BeatPollution. The initiative, a partnership between the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) and the Nairobi County Government aims to create awareness about the benefits of this environmentally-friendly form of transportation. There is an urgent need to redesign our cities to be more bike and people friendly instead of the city being planned around cars. This will ensure that more people become physically active, lessen noise and air pollution and have a fun, relaxing way to move and enjoy the city and its environs. We are now feeling the adverse effects of human-induced climate change and in order to reverse this we need more cars off our roads and embrace public transportation and cycling.
We here at the Briefing Room hope that more African cities embrace this as it is the future of transportation.
