The House of the Noble Family in Choseon Dynasty 2

in #culture7 years ago

I guess it is better to show you concept structure of the Yeom Seon Jae to understand easily.

This is my drawing.

The first part I had posting is ‘Bon Chae’. Bon Chae means main building.

I’d like to post next parts, the ancestral shrine, ‘Ahn Chae’ where the lady of the house live. From ‘Bon Chae’, to the left part is the ancestral shrine and the right part is ‘Ahn Chae’
‘Ahn Chae’ means inside building

Here, let’s go the ancestral shrine first
There was a gate to the ancestral shrine.

The ancestral shrine was the most important part in Korean traditional Yang Ban house.
Every day they opened the ceremony.

That was core of korean confucian philosophy. The confucius in Choseon dynasty was not only a philosophy but also religion.

Ancestral shrine was consisted of the ceremony building and the building for the body.

Building for the body was called ‘Young Dang’
Young Dang means literally Shadow house.
They had kept the body several days before burying. They could colour the house, because ‘Young Dang’ was room for the dead.

You could enter into ‘Ahn Chae’ where the lady of the house live. There is a gate to the Ahn Chae

The lady of the house was managing all house work. She control all servants.

Usually she kept the keys of the storage. We korean husband usually need to give all salary to our wives. And korean husbands are receiving pin money from their wives. In my opinion, it is affected from our history.
Ahn Chae was women’s space. It was strictly prohibited for men to enter into the Ahn Chae.

Garden of Ahn Chae

Byeol Dang is special building for conceiving a baby. To have a baby is the most important thing in the family continuation and prosperity. So they tried to make the best conditions for a daughter in law.
Nobody could interrupt a daughter in law.

Thank you for reading.

I love the plan of Korean houses that incorporate private courtyards to bring nature into the interior. Perhaps this is why these houses seem so serenely peaceful and still.

The sketch of the house shows the relationship of living quarters to the whole of life. Again, the eternal dualities - Man, woman, birth, death and eternity. It's the human story in architecture.

The modern apartment buildings crowd around the house and peer over the walls, intruding upon its privacy. This is unfortunate, but as you often point out, a consequence of Korean life transitioning from the ancient ways to the modern era.

This house plans for everything - a time for joy (birth), a time for mourning (death) and a time to separate(the Ahn Chae) and a time to come together in the ancestral shrine and be mindful of the living and the dead.

The photos are stunning, @slowwalker and it was helpful that you provided a plan of the house and supplied a detailed explanation.

A delightful tour today of a lovely house and way of life.

Thank you so much
Your explanation is much better than mine.
I am learning much from you

we are learning from each other, my friend. I look forward to your posts each day. You have a gentle spirit, @slowwalker, and I have learned much about Korean culture in the time I've been following you.

@slowwalker Very interesting

Very interesting informations.
This place looks quiet in the middle of the nature.

The culture. Very nice. These sacred and spiritually surcharged cultures of the world are all disappearing. It is the sad state of affairs for the times we are living. Thank you for the tour.

Sad but inescapable phenomenon

I can not say that I understand their culture but this seems so calming

One of the most important thing in life is how to live peacefully.
