Ekpe Festival

As the month of January is around the corner,preparation for Ekpe Festival is ongoing in Africa,somewhere in the south-east of Nigeria, precisely in Ariam osoigwe, Ikwuano Local Government of Abia State.

The Ekpe Festival is celebrated once in a year which is in Nkwo market day. Ekpe Festival is championed by a single warrior and is upheld by the entire community. To the single warrior Ekpe signifies bravery and courage,to the community it signifies togetherness and love.
There are so many activities which take place in Ekpe Festival such as dancing, singing, eating and drinking from a single pot, sacrificing a goat to the gods of the land for a better year ahead.

The attire for the festival for male is usually a wrapper (Orjih)which is tied around their waist with a native cap that signifies bravery and a cutlass, for the female; a wrapper which is tied around the chest and waist,beads are used to adorn their body.
The epic of this Festival is the sacrifice of a goat to the gods of the land. The goat is being killed by the single warrior in a splash of a cutlass. The head of the goat is usually thrown upwards and any male youth that catches it before it gets to the ground automatically joins the league of warriors. The Ekpe festival ends with celebration, make sure you don't miss out cause Ekpe 2018
