IOTA Trinity Wallet [BETA] (Android/iOS) - first impression

in #cryptocurrency7 years ago (edited)

Hey everyone!
Today, I want to show you a few impressions of the new beta of the IOTA Trinity Wallet for Android (and iOS).

In the past, IOTA got criticized a lot for their not-user-friendly Light Wallet that is available for desktops only. Sometimes it is even hard to receive or send IOTAs to/from other wallets. People do not really know which node they should use, their balance seems to be stolen (because they didn't connect to the tangle) or the wallet does not even open. That's not what you can call a 'user friendly wallet'.
But a few days ago, the IOTA team released the beta of the long-awaited Trinity Wallet. At the time of writing this article, there is no Desktop version of it yet. But the IOTA team announced it to be released soon!

Note: Please keep in mind, that this is only a beta version of the wallet yet. Bugs and mistakes are possible. So do not send large amounts before the official version is released!

Today I want to show you a few screenshots and functionalities.

At the first start of the app, you will have to generate a seed (your private key - the key for getting access to your account/balance). The wallet guides you through the different stages of setting the seed: First you will generate it. Then you need to save it, and then you will be asked to type it into the app again so it prevents you from not having backed up your seed.

In the first picture, you can see the balance screen where you got an overview of your account(s), your balance and the current price development. As you can see, I already did some small transactions for testing purposes.

In the next tab there is the option of sending IOTA. As you can see, you are also able to transact a message!

The IOTA unit-system is also well explained for beginners:

In the next tab, you are able to copy your receiving adress, so nothing spectacular:

If you want to look up your transaction history, you can easily open the next tab. It is also possible to pop up the different bundles where your transaction belonged to:

Here you have an overview about the different settings. It is also very cool that you are able to change the wallet theme!

If you navigate to "Advanced Settings", you are able to change things like the node that should be used, an auto-promo option or a manual synchronization:

A very interesting option is being able to choose the way of sending IOTAs. You can choose between "local proof of work" (your smartphone will perform little calculations to send your IOTAs) or "remote proof of work" (the calculation task will be sent to a node and it will calculate. If you have an old smartphone you should prefer the remote proof of work):

And a very important feature is the recognition of one of the biggest mistakes of using IOTA: the spending to an adress that was already spent from. In the light-desktop-wallet, you were able to send IOTAs to adresses that were already used for sending. The problem is simple but mostly unknown: Your sending adress always contains a little part of your seed. So if you would always send from the same adress and never change it, somebody could be able to calculate your seed and get access to your account. But the new Trinity Wallet recognizes adresses that were already used for sending and prevent users from sending to such an adress again. The person you want to send your IOTAs to needs to generate a new address first. This ensures maximum security for transactions!

All in all the IOTA team made a great job! The wallet is user friendly and has many different options (for beginners but also for experts). Please keep in mind again that this is only a beta version yet! So make sure you DO NOT send large amounts of IOTA until the official version is released!

So finally iota got some relevent in wallet, there was a lots of issue during 2017 when Iota price spiked and ppl wanted to move their coins to a safe wallet.. Many got hacked and many still keeping their assets on excahnegs..

@xchng thanks for sharing info

Yeah you are right!
Many people also used an online IOTA-seed generator, what is kinda stupid somehow .. :/
So I would not call it "getting hacked", more like "getting phished" :) "Hacked" sounds like the network is not safe, what it definately is! :)

You are welcome man! I hope you enjoyed it!

Nice article! this wallet has an easy look and feel !

Thank you!
Yeah, that is definately one of the best Android wallets I have ever seen :)

Great article, glad to see the wallet in action finally and critical end user features included.

Thank you! :)

Yeah I am also very hyped on the Qubic announcement on June 3rd :)
