This just sounds ridiculous... Hahaaaa.... suspects tried to use one of Russia's top scientists I guess got carried away with their brilliant minds and decided to use most powerful supercomputers in a Federal Nuclear Center (which were not even supposes to be connected to the internet in the first place to begin with) to mine Bitcoins.

The method miners use to extract cryptos involve traversing servers and computers controversially. This required movement means that miners have technically broken the law either knowingly or not. Recently, [Russian scientists were arrested for using a nuclear supercomputer to mine cryptos.[(https://gooruf.com/uk/news/2018/02/13/hacked-government-sites-prospects-crypto-mining/)

I wonder how long they thought they would get away with doing this even if they succeeded...It makes you think aren't these guys supposed to be a little smarter than this?

The Federal Nuclear Centre in Sarov, western Russia, is a restricted area.
The centre's press service said: "There has been an unsanctioned attempt to use computer facilities for private purposes including so-called mining."
The supercomputer was not supposed to be connected to the internet - to prevent intrusion - and once the scientists attempted to do so, the nuclear centre's security department was alerted. They were handed over to the Federal Security Service (FSB), the Russian news service Mash says.

Russian security officers have arrested several scientists working at a top-secret Russian nuclear warhead facility for allegedly mining crypto-currencies.The suspects had tried to use one of Russia's most powerful supercomputers to mine Bitcoins, media reports say.

According to Ars Technica there has been so much interest in cryptocurrency mining in Russia that a businessman named Alexey Kolesnik recently purchased two power plants in the Russian republics Perm Krai and Udmurtia, with plans of harnessing them for Bitcoin mining. There have also been other attempts to illicitly.

Recently, according to the BBC, Crypto Mining has encroached on Governmental websites in the UK, provoking concern.

No Mining on the Government! – Warnings to the site’s visitors

The Informational Commissioners Office was taken offline recently as visitors to the site had their computers hijacked by miners. The method of hijacking serves to use the unsuspecting visitors processing power to speed up the mining process. Over 4,000 sites suffered hacks from crypto mining software.

A malicious code that generated Monero was responsible for the multiple breaches. While cryptos have since lost a great deal of their shimmer in the last few weeks, they remain a reliable way of generating money.
