Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft, warns about Bitcoin: "It's one of the biggest speculations, it's the theory of the bigger fool"-28-03-2025

For years, Bill Gates has maintained a critical stance toward Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. These forms of digital money operate without the need for banks or governments, offering benefits such as fast international transactions, low fees, and greater privacy. However, their use continues to be a subject of debate due to the risks involved and their speculative nature.

Even before the pandemic, in 2018, Gates expressed concern about the negative effects they could have on society, considering Bitcoin to be a speculative investment without any intrinsic productivity. Its price fluctuates based on market perception, not on solid economic fundamentals. A few years later, he adopted a seemingly more neutral position, but he has never stopped cautioning small investors to be careful with their investments.

The truth about cryptocurrencies, according to Bill Gates

In 2022, during a conference organized by TechCrunch, the Microsoft co-founder reignited the discussion by asserting that "the cryptocurrency and NFT market is 100% based on the theory of the bigger fool." For those who aren't familiar with it, this financial theory suggests that investors can profit by buying overpriced assets simply because they expect someone else to pay even more for them, without considering their actual value.

Gates explained his position by stating that he's used to investing in assets like farmland or businesses, in other words, places where there is production or manufacturing of products. Additionally, with his usual irony, he added, "Obviously, expensive digital pictures of monkeys are going to improve the world immensely," referring to the popular Bored Apes NFTs, which were sold for hundreds of thousands of dollars.
