📣 Consensus 18: Will Bitcoin become the global currency of the Internet?
On the third and last day of the world's largest blockchain and crypto conference Consensus in New York, many topics were raised again. Among other things it was about blockchain implementation of large companies and general technical innovations.
Half as hope, half as expectation for the future, Jack Dorsey (CEO of Square, a mobile payment service provider, and co-founder of the blogging service Twitter) formulated his vision, the Bitcoin or another cryptocurrency, could one day become the "currency of the Internet". In his opinion, the Internet deserves its own currency for all transactions made over the Internet. Whether this currency will necessarily be the Bitcoin, however, Dorsey does not want to commit itself to this.
In addition to the usual promo show for crypto companies, long-term developments were adjusted. This year, for example, the interweaving of the "old economy" and the up-and-coming blockchain scene was more important than in previous years. Well-known traditional companies announced Blockchain projects or promised to invest in research into the technology.
The second major topic of the conference was regulation. Both sides want appropriate regulation of Blockchain applications, primarily of cryptocurrencies. Companies and start-ups hope that a regulatory framework will provide them with the security and support they need to continue working on their projects in peace and quiet. Government and regulators also want to create clear rules to prevent abuse and protect investors and consumers. However, representatives of the legislature also stressed the difficulty of such an undertaking without technical expertise. On the other hand, both sides are opposed to overregulation that is too restrictive and, in the worst case, could hinder innovation.
