“Why don't you reform yourselves?" & the Origin of "Hodl"

in #crypto7 years ago

“Ah, you miserable creatures! You who think that you are so great! You who judge humanity to be so small! You who wish to reform everything! Why don't you reform yourselves? That task would be sufficient enough.”
― Frédéric Bastiat dishing the socialists, love that guy, too funny!

Before the "lambos" and "moonings" crypto was absolutely stupendous. Remember what misfits we all were, Larimer (no offense, bruh), Buterin, Hoskinson, you, me, and the other supergeeks? Nobody knew what the hell BTC was back then, but we knew and we cared... passionately. When that dude yelled, "Hodl" I was there, and he didn't mean "Hold On for Dear Life." As I recall--correct me if I'm misremembering--the Bear Whale was out there on the market, absolutely dumping at around BTC $200. The Bull Whale had not yet showed up to save the day, and it was a heady, terrifying moment. Temporarily losing control of his spelling and possibly bowels, our hero up and yells, "Hodl, guys!" or words to that effect. We were all holding the line with him, holding fiercely to an idea, laughing our heads off, crapping our pants, dreaming about a comeback. Heh heh. And it wasn't so much a question of becoming rich as King Tut either, though nobody exactly objected. Crypto was about sticking it to the goddangin utopian psychopaths--all those technocrats, socialists, market fundamentalists, globalists--and making a bid for a world that was decentralized, free and private. It's still about that, it goes without saying, and we're still all going to be rich as Tut, but whenever somebody incorrectly decodes HODL, I smile and recall that moment with special pride. How about you?
