The crooked forest
The Crooked Forest is a mysterious and unique forest located outside the village of Nowe Czarnowo in western Poland. It is famous for its approximately 400 pine trees that grow with a distinct and unusual curve at the base of their trunks, all bending in the same direction before growing upward again.
Planted around 1930, the exact reason behind the trees’ odd shape remains unknown. Some believe it was a deliberate human intervention—possibly to create naturally curved timber for furniture or shipbuilding—while others suggest heavy snowfall or damage during early growth might have caused the strange formation.
Surrounded by a larger forest of straight-growing pines, the Crooked Forest has become a point of fascination for scientists, tourists, and photographers alike. Despite many theories, the true cause of the tree shapes remains one of nature’s unsolved mysteries, adding to the forest's eerie and enchanting atmosphere.
