Crocheted Sushi Roll - 13 February 2025

That's my finished Galentine's gift ready. I avoided making two heart earrings and opted for making a mini ('vegetarian') sushi roll instead : I love sushi.

The first step was to get the supplies and sadly although the colours were great, none of the yarn above was very suitable because it was Double Knitting and therefore too thick for the project.

I didn’t have any white 4-ply yarn, embroidery thread or crochet thread to make it look ‘dainty’. I had to take the white yarn and split it so I only used two strands of it instead of three. The process was not easy but it eventually worked.

I quickly got to work using my 2.00mm crochet hook. The process was the same I used for making the Fox Coaster I wrote about here.
After completing the centre I just did two rows of white. As you can see there were lots of messy ends but I kept all that as part of the stuffing so I didn’t worry about dealing with loose ends.

I then joined the darker yarn for the dark nori side. The thickness of this yarn was ideal; it was actually a sock yarn ball I bought from Lidl’s some time ago and haven’t used it yet. As I only used three rows I’m sure I’ll have enough for a pair of socks.
After completing the side I was not happy with the jagged edge as you can see above. I remembered @danmaruschak’s crochet posts about colour changing so I knew there was a better way of making a straight line. I quickly looked for a You tube tutorial for instructions on how to make this happen. Below is a link to a tutorial on how to avoid jagged edges when joining colours horizontally in crochet :
I watched it very carefully and slowly began to copy how to do it. The process reminded me a bit of doing intarsia knitting where you have to twist the adjoining colours together to avoid holes.

It was a slow process but I noticed the difference straight away :

The photo above shows you the sushi rolls side by side showing the big difference. I must practise this technique more.

I was happy with the result although I did feel I lost a bit of edge definition; perhaps I should have just crocheted on the back of the stitch rather than front and back.

The next stage was joining the sushi roll bit to an earring hook and for that I also used three beads and the same method as I used for joining the red heart here.
You may also want to make a crochet sushi roll yourself. Below's a clear tutorial with Spanish subtitles if you're interested.
I'm very happy with how this project turned out. It has a lot of potential for improvement starting with the type of yarn used. I'll certainly be making some more.
Incidentally @wakeupkitty asked me yesterday about the weight of the heart earring; both earrings together on my domestic scales weighed 2g.
Thank you for reading !
The sushi looks good and it's even better you made something you like yourself, give what fits to your niche. Your friend will be so happy. Did you celebrate/met on February the 13th?
It's helpful you added the videos on how to make a new colour invisible I figured it out about two years ago.
In this case, the loose ends are great for a filling but do you know it's possible to simply crochet the ends into the stitches? I find it a great trick and it saves me the work with the needle (and a lot of time).
Thanks for letting me know the weight of the earrings, 2 grams isn't heavy
A Happy Valentine's Day to you.
