Mapping a fictional, realistic world with Open Geo Fiction and my first city
Hello folks, you're reading my first post! Below is a picture of a fictional city I've been working on mapping for almost a year now.
Of course this is only the beginning, I have big plans for the surrounding area as well.
I created this on Open Geo Fiction, a website that combines the OpenStreetMap platform with mapping software to allow users to create their own realistic looking countries.
It's basically a fictional Google Maps, with an entire world mapped by individual users. Some countries are collaborative, but most are individually owned. The community is amazing and very helpful, and so are the admins!
This is what the world looks like, zoomed out.
As you can see, there are still plenty of empty territories for interested mappers to claim.
So, I am continuing to work on my city, making a bit of progress each day. It's an American style city, loosely based on the geography and culture of Philadelphia, PA and its surrounding area.
Here is a section of the city I was impressed with, a few miles from the center where it gets a bit suburban:
Thanks for looking at my work. Maybe you'll be inspired enough to map your own city! If you do, I can give you advice and help you get your account set up.
Cool! A hightech version of what I spent about a third of my highschool notebooks doodling about. I'll be checking this out.
Interesting. Kind of like Sim City?
Similar, but there is a lot more room for creativity here. Simcity limits you to a simple grid and only certain buildings, this has much more of a DIY aspect to it. The possibilities are limited by your imagination only!
