The Remote Associates Test was designed to measure the ability to flexibly a freely associate ideas [Mednick and Mednick 1967]. The student is given three words and asked to find a fourth word that is related to the other three. The first three words may seem to have little or no similarity to each other. But all three are associated with the fourth. For example, what is related to these three words?

cookies sixteen heart

The answer is sweet. Cookies are sweet. Sweet is part of the phrase sweet sixteen. It is also part of the word sweetheart.

What is related to these three words?

poke go molasses

The answer is slow. Slow goes with each of the other words: slow poke, go slow, slow as molasses. The fourth word may be related to the other three for various reasons. The difficulty of this test can be adjusted by making one of the matched words one that is less closely related to the answer.
