On the issue of Libertarians and vaccinations.

It seems to me that what many Libertarians actually want, isn't the voluntary and free coordination of people who want to help each other when the costs are low. Instead, it is a matter of getting brownie points for being strong enough to do everything All By Themselves.

"My immune system is there for a reason" can even seem like a vaguely appropriate response to "Please get vaccinated."

But to me, this kind of argument is akin to saying "I don't need a map, I have a car."

At the end of the day, those who subscribe to voluntary cooperation in place of individualism see it as reasonable to use both sometimes.

There is also the 4M Test of Muslims/Marijuana/(gay) Marriage/Migrants to sort out the libertarians along similar lines. I like a lot of libertarians, but there certainly is an empathy gap for a bunch of them. It is the difference between Don't Tread on Anyone and Don't Tread on Me.

A pandemic naturally is a community risk. Respiratory viruses have indiscriminate transmission. The coronavirus especially so with significant asymptomatic transmission. Some components of personal responsibility and joint cooperation are necessary.

Vaccination is a pure public good. You getting vaccinated helps not only reduce your risk, but helps reduce the risk to others. I'm in a statistical low risk group for the coronavirus, but I got vaccinated to protect my family, friends, and community.

Many confuse libertarianism superficially as selfish rugged individualism, but it is richer than that. Libertarianism is also about the individual responsibility to not harm others.
