Puerto Viejo for the first time

in #costarica7 years ago

Hey guys!! Good to write again...This first entry will be about Puerto Viejo (more specifically the first time I went there, on december 31, 2015), a small town located on the Caribbean coast, in the province of Limón.

First you need to know, it is a journey that lasts 4 to 5 hours depending on traffic and climate to reach Puerto Viejo from San José. If you are going by bus like I did that time then you have to buy the tickets on the North Atlantic bus terminal, in Barrio Mexico, 12 street between 7 and 9 avenue, San José. Each ticket costs around ₡5.270 which is approximately $9.50.

On that ocassion me and Paula (just a friend at that time) arrived at 10:30 p.m, had a beer on a local bar to buy some time because it was raining, the rain didn´t stop so we had to ran to "Rocking G´s" the place where we were staying. This hotel is quite peculiar since you have 3 types of accommodation, the first is to stay in a room, the second is to carry your own tent, that was the one we used, for this option we paid around $6.00 per night and the last is to rent a hammock for sleep in it and a locker to keep your belongings.
After I set our tent, Paula and I meet at the restaurant in Puerto viejo downtown, as she was ahead to order the dinner to celebrate the year year, I arrived at 11:30, at half dinner we received the year with champagne and fireworks, after that we went to a party that covered the entire beach.

For the rest of the days we spent the time walking on the town and exploring nearing beaches like Cocles, where you can access through the jungle or along the main street.

You should keep in mind that Limón has a climate that changes a lot, it can be a sunny day, and from one moment to another it can rain, but do not worry as it depends on the time you go, these showers may not last long, also with the heat that makes a wet does not fall badly.

Also you can find exotic animals almost everywhere, in addition there are several wildlife preservation shelters as well as national parks.

As for the food, there are a lot of delicious, tradicional dishes but you must try the rice and beans; which by the way it's my favorite Caribbean plate. This meal consists of rice and beans (as you could tell by the name) cooked with coconut oil and habanero pepper, it is usually accompanied by some meat, mainly seasoned chicken, salad and of course fried plantain can not be missed.

Puerto Viejo is a very intresting place, full of color and is really quiet with relaxed and kind people and it is hard to cover such an amazing place in just one post so maybe in the future I will be doing another one about it.

Guys if you really want to live a season without stress or worries you should definitely go.

Rice and beans is definitely a must try dish! It does encapsulate Caribbean food in Costa Rica

Classic, classic Caribbean food; Rice and Beans , Chicken and Plantain. You could be talking about Jamaica, Cuba, Haiti, Puerto Rico or the Bahamas haha. Thanks for the beautiful article. Now I want to go there.
