Yes, I remember when Canola oil was being touted as a great alternative to olive oil. Did you know that Americans often don't know that rapeseed oil is the same as Canola oil.
And did you know where the work canola came from? Many years ago, canola oil marketers were having a big marketing conference in Canada. A lot of rapeseed is grown in southern Alberta. They didn't think that Americans (largest market) would go for a product called 'rapeseed oil.' So they agreed to come up with a new name. They probably batted around a lot of different possibilities, but ended up choosing canola - from the two words 'Canadian oil.'
