Reminds me of when I went to San Francisco, I was with some friends and we got lost, we stopped a woman and asked for some directions.
Me 'Can you help us get to X? We're lost'
Woman 'Go this way. Hey I love your accent, you're Australians!'
Me 'We're British actually...'
Woman 'No, you're Australian'
There didnt seem to be much point in arguing my case, I clearly was in the inferior position. Maybe I was Australian in a 'past life' or something ;)
That's what happened to my friend here in BC, he moved from London to Canada in the 70's; About five years ago someone started telling him he was Scottish.
"Have you ever heard a Scottish Accent?"
"Mel Gibson."
"He's Australian. I'm English."
"No, I'm pretty sure it's Scottish."
He walked away after that.
