ColorChallenge: SundayPurple - Spring Crocus (Crocus vernus "Pickwick")
Who doesn't love crocus flowers, delicate-looking but often blooming through the snow to refresh winter-weary hearts? Easy to grow, these petite members of the iris family put on a late winter/early spring show. There are also "snow crocuses," which are winter-blooming (C. chrysanthus and C. tommasinianus), and fall-blooming "autumn crocuses" (C. autumnale and others) species of crocus. Crocuses come in a variety of colors: stripey lavender ("Pickwick"is shown here), solid lavender, deep purple, blue, white and yellow.
Fun fact - Saffron is harvested from the stigmas of the saffron crocus (Crocus sativus).
