Diversity of colors in a small bird!!


This beautiful species is characterized by a marked sexual dimorphism, the males have bright colors, the head and the necks are light blue, the black beak and back, the base of the beak, around the eye, the rump, the chest, abdomen, are bright orange; the wings and tail are black and blue and blue, that is why it is also called seven colors even if it does not have seven colors. The color of the females is opaque, the body is grayish brown, the throat and rump are olive yellow and the young specimens have a similar design but very discolored. They are striking birds because of their color. It really does not have seven colors as its common name says. It measures between 17 and 18 cm.


It is of American origin from the zone of Paraguay, Bolivia, Brazil, Uruguay and includes numerous provinces from the coast to the center of Argentina. Generally it is not migratory, it produces some regional displacements according to its nutritional needs and to the climate, but more precisely its origin is Guaraní

It lives in forests, bushes, cultivated trees and even in urban areas. Almost does not walk on the ground, walk in pairs or small flocks, at the beginning of spring they join other migratory birds.
