个 gè for people, groups, cities, and nations
(number + 个）to denote how many of that item
一个人 yī gè rén one person
二个人 èr gè rén two people
十二个学生 shíèr gè xuésheng twelve students
五个弟弟 wǔ gè dìdi five younger brothers

你有三个哥哥吗？ Nǐ yǒu sān gè gēge ma? Do you have three older brothers?
我有一个妹妹 Wǒ yǒu yī gè mèimei I have one younger sister
学生有四个老师 xuésheng yǒu sì gè lǎoshī The student has four teachers
老师有二十五个学生。十一个是男人，十四个是女人
lǎoshī yǒu èrshíwǔ ge xuésheng. shíyī gè shì nánrén, shísì gè shì nǚrén
The teacher has 25 students. Eleven are male, fourteen are female.

辆 liàng vehicles like cars, buses, taxis, etc.
台 tái machines like computers, cellphones, etc
张 zhāng items like tables, paper, etc.
本 běn a collection of paper products, like books and magazines
只 zhī animals

他有三辆汽车 tā yǒu sān liàng qìchē He has three cars
我们有两只猫 wǒmen yǒu liǎng zhī māo We have two cats. (两 liǎng - two)
她有两台手机 tā yǒu liǎng tái shǒujī She has two cellphones
我有两本书 wǒ yǒu liǎng běn shū I have two books
他们有一张桌子，六个椅子 tāmen yǒu yī zhāng zhuōzi, liù gè yǐzi
They have one table, six chairs.
