Playing in the cloud - My story

in #cloudgaming7 years ago (edited)

A lot of people consider me a bit of an IT freak - "faith" in free software, a phone with software that even Wifi does not support (and defaults), and so on. Of course, free software always counted for me, but I tried to combine it with new technologies that do not always provide this freedom.

The entry can be a bit chaotic

The times were such that despite the lack of money I watched the new Galaxy Note how they work on Youtube, read about overclocking systems, about new technologies - for example about the mentioned Graniu in the cloud or Cloud Gaming.

Cloud Gaming

Cloud Gaming can be described as such. We have a stream of games - it usually has a 20 second delay. And what if we reduce this delay until the image is transmitted (which can cause small artifacts), and the program will download the mouse keys and movements and perform - In principle, a remote desktop? This is Cloud Gaming - we get picture and sound, send keys and mouse movements.

OnLive

The first service I had was Onlive - It was a service in which by paying a subscription (PLN 35 for PlayPack, PLN 50 for Playpack with something else, I will describe it soon) we could play games that were on the list 24 hours a day. So I played in WRC3, War Thunder, Mafia 2.

Generally Playpack was a collection of about 250 different games, the second pack (~ 30 PLN) it was possible to connect Steam account, however, we could not install anything from outside the list, which was short. A total "combined subscription" for PLN 50 could be bought

Unfortunately, my pictures have disappeared from the internet and only in poor quality are (or more precisely this one).

Sony

Sony ... how I hate you! Sony was working on his own OnLive for PlayStation (which is probably only in Playstation 4). At the beginning, the company from Japan bought OnLive competition, and then OnLive itself, which in 2015 ceased to provide the service.

LiquidSky

The market hates the vacuum, after OnLive LiquidSky started to appear, which did not work like OnLive. Compared to it, we got a full-fledged operating system, on which we could install what we like (if it was legal). A very good idea.

Worse with the performance - the company probably did not know the codecs of the image and could not optimize it nicely. The beginnings of the project were difficult, but each subsequent version was getting better.

Generally, these were interesting times in the history of this product. As an Early Adopter I remember how the computers were not yet Windows, and Ubuntu in the experimental version.

These were the beginnings of my channel on Youtube, which did not earn recognition, but people wanted to watch how LiquidSky works - a few thousand views nabili;)

LiquidSky 2

There is a principle in computer science, "How something works - DO NOT WORK." Unfortunately, the creators were "too" ambitious and in my opinion they kicked off the project. Of course, in the beginning, as new versions of products - it was unusable - servers lay and squealed, the service was spoiled every now and then ... and what for?

The new version in terms of optimization lies and snakes, my computer, despite 6 cores and a weak graphics card, is unable to smoothly decode frames from them. Of course, I could buy a good graphics card for the computer ... but if I buy a good graphics card I will not need LiquidSky.

OnLive has been running smoothly on 1 core Athlon, and even 6 cores can not comprehend.

What else can be said - A virtual computer is launched within 3 minutes. HOW POSSIBLE, EVEN WINDOWS 10 WILL COME WITH 15 SECONDS MAX. I do not understand this, 3 minutes of loading the system - what did they do to him ?! And it is clean and slimmer Windows 10, not its "full-fledged" edition (which is fast anyway).

It also annoys that if you do not log in for a while, your data goes to the basket. This means that this service is only suitable for games, otherwise you will lose your documents as you use it. Of course, you can only work in "Off", because CUDA or OpenCL do not exist ... Even kick ZCash can not be done! ;) I will also add that you can not play 27/7 for 30 days, as in OnLive, and we have a time limit. Limit is true for Poles, but how little they play.
