Clays in cosmetic
Majority of people alredy heard about clays and their magical power to detoxify skin, inspite of it, knowledge about clays is still not much expended.
So, what is clay?
Clay is a very fine powder of mineral origin. Different types of clays have different compositions, colors, properties and are appropriate to different skin type.
Properties:
- absorption capabilities(different types of clay have different strengths)
- antibacterial effects
- content of minerals and trace elements (all kinds of clay are rich in various minerals)
- abrasive (exfoliating) and polishing abilities
- support blood circulation to the skin
What to NOT do:
Of course, most of advantages can turn into disadvantages if we use the clay incorrectly for a long time. It Is important to use clays ONLY for recommanded time, or it can dry out our skin or hair. Also do not use metal dishes to prepare clays, it brings away lot of positive effects that clays have.
Quality:
The best quality clay is 100% natural and very little modified, without bigger pieces and hard minerals.
History:
Clays has been traditionally used for making cosmetics and drugstores for thousands of years, and is also used in folk medicine. Many cultures use clays to wash themselves, treat various skin problems, often in conjunction with herbs.
What do we use clay in?
- face masks (the most well-known use of clay, its important to choose clay that Is the best for your skin type)
- cleansers, soaps (it abrades easily, absorbs oils and wraps other impurities)
- decorative cosmetic (make-up, powders, eye shadows, blushes, lipsticks… Clay gives the product a body, helps its adhesion, promotes a covering effect. But again, we are careful if we have dry skin)
- shampoos (The clay supports the cleansing ability, we choose type of clay according to the type of scalp)
- Dry shampoos (Mixed with starch or alone. We choose the color according to the hair shade)
- Other skin cleansing products (washing emulsions, gels, skin soaps, various cubes or rolls, grains, powders… Cleaning products can really be a kick. In any case, we choose clay according to skin type. If we have drier or sensitive skin, you will probably want to handle the clay carefully and not use it daily)
- Solid, powder deodorants (especially white clay is very nice for deodorant, even together with starch)
- Toothpastes and powders. Clay, especially kaolin, is used in natural and not so natural commercial toothpastes, especially for its ability to gently polish the tooth surface. Its quality is very important here, it must be really fine without any impurities.
Types of clays( there is really lot of types, i named the most important:
- Green (French clay) Is one of the most used in cosmetics. It wraps dirt well on itself and removes dead skin cells. It has great absorption capacity, so it is not recommended for daily use by people with drier or sensitive skin, it is suitable for oily skin.
- White clay - (kaolin) is very gentle, does not have such strong absorption properties and is also suitable for more sensitive and drier skin. It will always leave your skin relaxed.
-Bentonit has significant absorption properties. When used, it behaves differently than most other clays, is heavy and increases in volume as it absorbs fluid. We can find it in different variants, depending on which mineral dominates the composition (sodium, calcium,…). It is ideal for oily skin and hair. - Rhassoul - Ghassoul - (Moroccan lava) has strong absorption properties, big amount of minerals, it is used especially for oily hair and hair. For a drier and more sensitive skin, we avoid using this clay more often.
- Pink clay is soft, suitable for normal and drier and more sensitive skin, but it also can do magic with acne.
-Red clay has strong absorbency, It can dry out skin easily when leaving too long.
So what are your experiences with clays? Did you ever use them? If not, trust me, Its time to try it :^).
