Built as the McKenzie Hotel, this structure was constructed by Alexander McKenzie who opened its doors on January 1st, 1911. Edward Patterson, later purchased the hotel. Patterson had constructed the adjacent Soo Hotel, also listed on the National Register, in 1906. The hotel was renamed the Patterson Hotel in 1927, shortly after the death of Alexander McKenzie.
The ten-story, 150-room, hotel was the tallest structure in Bismarck. In 1931, the state capitol was destroyed in a fire. In that time department offices relocated to the hotel. When the new North Dakota State Capitol was built in 1934, it took the record for the tallest structure in Bismarck, and all of North Dakota.
Between reported hauntings, speakeasy accesses, and hidden underground tunnels that connect the hotel to the train depot across Main Street, there are many stories behind the bricks of this downtown monument!
