Inside out 2: similar themes but enjoyablesteemCreated with Sketch.

Disney has been struggling for the past decade or so. Fortunately, Pixar still has some good ideas left and they thankfully made that movie, depiste similar themes to the first one.

Riley is hitting puberty! As a result, new emotions take over (especially anxiety, in orange) just before she starts hockey camp to increase her chances to make the team.

As I said, themes in this movie are similar to the first: Joy trying to control emotions and memories to make Riley like she wants. But while she is more accepting of the core emotions (her memory spheres are not monochromatic), she still puts many (supposedly) "insignificant ones" at the back of her mind in order to make her think she's an entirely good person. The exact opposite happens when anxiety takes over.

When anxiety, embarasment, envy and ennui (boredom) take over, they "bottle up" the other ones who then try to make their way back up. Sadly, the "sar-chasm" broke Riley's flow of thoughts so they will need to go veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery far back.

In other words, the emotions displayed are very well done, especially anxiety. When Riley is in that penalty box, her anxiety is such it looks like she was going to have a heart attack. We've all been there...

Only down side: like too many movies, men are just passive characters meant to be comic reliefs. Here, it's Riley's dad who doesn't even seem to care; his emotions are hooked on something else.

In short, Inside Out 2 is well-worth your time, no matter your age. The allegories of "bottle-up emotion" and the sense of self and well-represented. It's who we are, no matter what we've done...
