Review | The Meg
The Meg
When I set out to see The Meg I had a feeling that it would be one of these films with a strong protagonist, with a simple plot, entertaining to spend time with your family, but without any further development than that. And well, I like that kind of movies, to spend a while without more, and thank goodness I expected it to be this kind, because it's just what The Meg, but slightly worse. Let's see, don't misunderstand me, the film is bad, it's badly made, badly written, it's even boring in some moments, and above all, the most predominant thing in the film is the cliché. The characters are clichés, the scenes are repetitive, I literally every scene that tried to surprise you with a scare using the Megalodon, predicted absolutely everything that was going to happen, and guess what? Yes, it did. And yes, at some points it takes all the magic out of what the director was supposed to accomplish in the moments of suspense and tension, but even so it was nice to see Jason Statham fighting body to body with a Megalodon.
Yes, the action is insipid and dull, it's not an action taken to the limit as Mission Impossible 6, but neither is it extremely ridiculed that makes it entertaining as in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, it's absolutely a bunch of random clichés without any basis. And its light entertainment is based on its protagonist, who unfortunately is also a cliché, but at least Jason Statham gives it a little feeling, trying to get it a little afloat, they can not deny that it is great how you get to throw into the open sea to face a giant prehistoric shark. Although Jason is only fulfilling a Marine stereotype that is not a brave and muscular Marine, that Dwayne Johson or Vin Diesel could have fulfilled, it is not the actor's fault that the script was only the result of putting on a stereotype action movie and he tries to put in an effort (Although, I read that he didn't even end up happy with the movie, imagine the level of deception.)
And well the theme of the villain/star: The Megalodon. I feel a bit bad, because I expected a lot from him, it was great the idea of reviving an extinct animal to face today, and as I have said several times, the idea and see a man face to face with this animal of 20m was not wasted, and well, in a way, if I half fulfill it, because the scenes can be rescued as the best of the film, the rest of the film does not accompany it and take a lot of weight. To see, this kind of movies, as I said, I usually like them, but I'm really disappointed by the amount of giant action, which they put aside. You find yourself in moments when it seems like you're about to go through that super brutal moment where the Megalodon will attack everything with total ferocity, but they replace that with a typical scream that you would find in a cheap horror movie, and this is action, see inequality? No, it's more, not even a scream, just a hint of a badly done computer effect. I mean, this has a 150 million budget, where did all this go? The Megalodon had like 10 different sizes throughout the film, the fish in the water, sometimes the effects made of rubber. Where did all those 150 million go?
And well, I know I touched a lot of totally visible mistakes, but in spite of all this, the film did have material to entertain me in some moments, but it's nothing more than that, moments, scenes, light but funny, where everything seems to change to the funny movie I was waiting for. But I think his problem is that he seems to take the whole plot very seriously, and it doesn't come out at all, and precisely the moments where they forget this is precisely where you think the film will work. So as a critical opinion, I have to say yes, it's bad, but even so, I think that if you don't mind constant repetition, you'll enjoy the film.
