Can you change Gods mind? (Prayer Series Part 2)

How prayer works?

Encountering God is the most pleasurable experience we can have. Prayer is conversation with God and is one way we can interact with God.

The first part of prayer is worship. When Jesus models how to pray, He first says “Our father in heaven, hallowed be your name!” (Matthew 6:9) First things first: bless the Lord! We are told to “enter into His gates with thanksgiving and into His courts with praise.” (Psalm 100:4) When we pray, we enter into God’s presence and in His presence is “fullness of joy.” (Psalm 16:11) This is why God said [I will] “make them joyful in My house of prayer.” (Isaiah 56:7)

Agreement

Prayer is also the most powerful thing we can do! We need to stop saying "well...all I can do is pray about it;" and rather, "I get to pray about it! Things can change! There is so much hope!"

We don’t pray to inform God. He already knows what we need before we even ask Him. (Matthew 6:8) God invites us to join Him in what He is doing. When we pray, we simply agree with what He wants and ask Him to have His way and do the very thing He desires. In essence, intercession can be boiled down to telling God the things He tells us to tell Him: and then He releases His power and accomplishes things in us and in the world that we could never do on our own.

What about this:

Yes!

Proof:

Prayer changes things! It really works! God even changes His mind sometimes! One of the many Biblical examples is seen in Moses interceding for Israel numerous times. Through Moses’ intercession, God changed His mind and He spares Israel. When God was ready to completely wipe out the Israelites, Moses’ persistent intercession on their behalf spared them.

Another example is when Abraham pleads for God to spare Sodom in Genesis 18. Initially Abraham asked if God would spare the city if he could find 50 righteous people. After God agrees, Abraham proceeded to ask..."well...what about 45, God?" Abraham continued to ask God how many righteous people he would have to find in Sodom for it to be spared. Every time Abraham proposed a lower number of people that he would have to find for God to spare it, God granted his request. Abraham asked God a total of 6 times.

Each time God changed His mind and lowered the minimum number of righteous people living in Sodom that He would require to spare it. Before Abraham asked He was going to destroy it. Clearly, God does sometimes change His mind when we ask!

Prayer

Father, Holy are you! I give you thanks for you are good and your love endures! Thank you that You allow us to impact you! Thank you that you are not distant but actually so eager to meet with us! Thank you that you just want relationship with us! God, help me to value relationship with you as much as you value it! Help me to value the relationship even more than the answers! Help me to value spending time with you above all else!
