Marine Corps newest Mascot Reports for Duty
Cpl. Bryce Hodges of Marine Corps Barracks Washington introduces Chesty XV, the latest addition to the Marine Corps Mascots.
The marines have had an English Bulldog as their mascot since 1922 when the first one, "Jiggs" was enlisted by Brigadier General Smedley Butler who signed his enlistment papers. Upon his death, Jiggs II became his replacement. Later replacements, in the 30's through the 50's were all named Smedley in honor of General Butler.
In 1957 Chesty made his first appearance as the Marine Corps Mascot. Named after LtGen. Lewis B. “Chesty” Puller Jr., all mascots have retained the name. Next year, Chesty XV will take his honored position as the most well known, and loved, mascots of any military service in the world.
