Augmenting special effects with visual effects sounds like the right way to go, unless you've got the time and patience to go for stop motion ;>)

I feel there's a lot of lessons to be learnt from these kind of process videos. All the things that you talk about remind me of what an octopus or juggler you need to be to direct a movie. Not sure when I will get back to that myself. I am kind of enjoying my filmmaking hiatus
