My Most Consistent Hobby For The Last 5 Years: 30 Days Writing Challenge - Day 8
Over the course of my life, which is still relatively young at 33, I've had many hobbies. I tend to jump to what interests me at the moment and leave that behind quickly once something else appears to be a bit more interesting. And as a workaholic, I rarely have time for hobbies. Instead, I work in small distractions into my day to keep my mind sharp.
@Dragosroua is challenging Steemians to a 30-Day Writing Challenge. For day #8, he asks, "What’s Your Most Consistent Hobby For The Last 5 Years?"
My Most Consistent Hobby Over the Past 5 Years
If you follow my blog (thank you if you do, and hello there if you don't yet), you probably know the answer to this question. My most consistent hobby over the past 5 years has been online poker. The combination of skill, luck, and the excitement of winning keeps me interested while it doesn't always take a lot of focus to play.
Whether I'm sitting in bed at night playing on my cellphone or have a second screen up at home while I'm working, having a freeroll poker tournament (meaning it costs nothing to play) up helps the day go by while only requiring a few seconds of my time every couple of minutes.
Thanks to Steemit, I discovered the @SPL (Steem Poker League), which hosts daily freeroll poker tournaments every day on Lucksacks.com. Before the SPL, I used to play in freerolls on Bet Online. This helped me learn how to win even in tournaments with thousands of players. It was a good exercise to push my hobby forward.
Outside of just playing poker, I also enjoy watching live poker streams on YouTube. From Stones Live Poker to Live At The Bike, I occasionally tune in to watch poker being streamed live from a poker room or casino. The commentators usually give insightful tips, and I get to see first-hand how different players approach similar situations.
Although I haven't been able to play live poker much over the past five years, I have played in tournaments in Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, and Nebraska. I hope to someday take my hobby to the World Series of Poker to play in a small event, but I'll have to work my way up to that.
