Although hurricanes produce death and devastation, they also have key environmental functions. They generate positive effects for the oceans and marine life, especially for corals. We explain why.

The images of the passage of Hurricane Irma through the Atlantic Ocean show only destruction: dozens of deaths, devastated cities and a huge challenge for governments. However, hurricanes have environmental benefits.

Multiple experts have explained that the natural phenomena that hit the United States recently - such as Hurricane Harvey that devastated Houston and now Hurricane Irma - respond to the impending climate change. And although US President Donald Trump is skeptical, it is true that a hot ocean favors the development of hurricanes.

Hurricanes are fast and cold winds, so their passage over the seas produces a cooling effect that makes the surface waters cool significantly. This can lead to other subsequent hurricanes, as happened in the late summer of 2005 with Katrina and Rita in the too warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. But it can also be beneficial.
