I agree that people trying to milk the system compromises the growth potential. I treat it more as an investment, but I'm not desperate to get rich. It's fun and I want to see others who deserve it do well
Ultimately, it's a bit like YouTube, or any other monetized platform: People have great dreams and wildly unrealistic expectations. Just how many of YouTube's tens of millions of members actually earn enough ad revenue (let's say US $500+ a month) to make a significant difference to their lives? A thousand? A few thousand? Can't imagine it's much more than that...
I just want for people who come here to have an enjoyable time blogging and interacting... and maybe they'll get a little something on the side.

I would like to see more options to spend Steem. So you might earn a few dollars in a month and then spend some on music or a comic. That way the creative people get more income. I've done some of that, but there is not a formal marketplace yet that I know of. It should not just be about accumulating wealth
