Your cat needs a periodic medical check, too / 猫にも定期健康診断が必要です

I am not a medical expert of pets but I used to work in the pet industry for about 7-8 years and worked with vets.

私はペットの医療専門家ではありませんが、以前７−８年ペット業界で仕事をしていたことがあり、獣医師と仕事をしていました。

Vets were often saying how could we encourage cat owners to bring their cats for a periodic medical check up.
Unlike dogs owners, cat owners don't bring their cats to the vet unless their cats become really sick, partly because there are less requirements for vaccination. (In Japan, rabies vaccine is required by law)

よく獣医師が言っていたのが、どうしたら猫オーナーさんに猫さんを健康診断に連れてきてもらえるか、ということでした。犬オーナーさんと違って、猫オーナーさんは、猫さんの体調が非常に悪くならない限り、猫さんをあまり病院に連れてきません。これには、おそらくワクチンが必要性が低いということもあります。（日本では、狂犬病ワクチンは、法律で必須です）

Domestic cats are considered as descendants of African wild cats, which used to hunt alone in the desert. While dogs are considered as descendants of wolfs, which used to hunt in groups. Cats try to hide poor health by their nature as animals to act independently. This is because if their poor health become obvious, there are risks that they will be targeted as prey.

家猫は、砂漠で単独で狩をしていたリビアヤマネコの末裔だと考えられています。 一方、犬はグループで狩をしていた狼の末裔と考えられています。猫さんは単独で狩をしていた動物として、本能的に体調不良を隠そうとします。なぜなら、体調不良が明らかに知れると、獲物をしてターゲットにされてしまうリスクがあるからです。

Vets say it is common that when cats are brought to them, their health condition is too bad and sometimes there isn't much that they can do.

獣医師曰く、猫さんが病院につれてこられたとき、すでに健康状態が非常に悪くなってしまっており、医療的にできることがあまりなくなってしまっていることが多々あるそうです。

I take my cat for a medical check up every year. At the last medical check up, my cat was diagnosed with diabetes and chronic pancreatitis. I was very shocked as I have been careful about the health of my cat. However, luckily I was able to start treatment before the symptoms of the disease got worse, such as vomiting, anorexia, etc.

私は自分の猫さんを毎年健康診断に連れて行っています。昨年末の健康診断で糖尿病と慢性膵炎と診断されました。猫さんの健康には気をつけていたのでショックでしたが、幸運にも嘔吐や食欲不振など明確な病気の症状が出てくる前に治療を始めることができました。

Since the end of last year I am taking my cat to the animal hospitalSince the end of last year I take my cat to the animal hospital every 1-2 weeks. His blood glucose level seems to be getting close to normal now. Though he still needs insulin injections currently, yesterday I was told that he may not need the injections in the near future.

昨年末から１−２週間おきに猫さんを病院につれていっており、 現在は、血糖値は、正常値に近くなってきてます。今の所まだインシュリン注射は必要ですが、近い将来いらなくなるかもしれないと、昨日病院で言われました。

Please mind that even without clear symptoms, your cat may have health issues. Take your cat to a medical check up regularly.

明確な症状がでていなくても、健康に問題がある場合があります。みな様も愛猫さんを定期的に健康診断に連れて行ってあげてください。
