Setting SMART Goals
Sometimes you feel that you are working very hard, but you do not achieve anything. Maybe your problem is that your goals are not set properly. In this sense, I would like to share with you an interested framework or tool that you can use to set your goals and objectives effectively. This tool is called SMART.
But what does SMART mean?
SMART is a mnemonic acronym to guide in setting your goals. The letter S and M mean Specific and Measurable, A stand for Agreed-Upon, R and T mean Reasonable or Realistic and Time Bound. According to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SMART_criteria the first known use of the term occurs in 1981 issue of management review by George T Doran.
Now you can set a SMART goal for your team. For instance, you can describe the goal in terms of the SMART framework, providing evidence in support for each dimension of a SMART goal.
This is my example:
@leovidalm is a home improvement retailer store operating in Venezuela. Sales have been annually increased by 5 % average since the store opened. The main goal is to increase volume of sales by 10% compared to previous year.
Now, the questions that must be responded is if the goal is aligned with the SMART goal framework are:
Is it specific?
- Specific: Increase Volume of Sales by 10% in 2018 compared to the previous year.
Is it measurable?
- Measurable: We could measure this goal within this target timeframe. The company will increase sales units from $100.000 to $108.000.
Do you see evidence that it is agreed upon?
- Agreed Upon: This goal was discussed with all member of the team and people commit to the goal.
Is there evidence that the goal is reasonable?
- Reasonable: This goal is within a practical range of achievement. Employees will have necessary skills, competences and abilities to achieve this goal.
Is there a clear timeline attached to this goal?
- Time-Bound: Increase sales by the end of the year.
The SMART framework is an effective tool that provides guide and motivation and it is easy to use by anyone. I encourage you to use it and effectively implement to achieve your objectives in you career, business and ultimately, in your life.
Best Regards,
@leovidalm
